PROJECT NAME

Royal NZ Navy Bridge Simulator

VALUE

$1,250,000

CLIENT

Kongsberg Norcontrol (Norway) and the Ministry of Defence

COMPLETION

Jan 2000 – May 2000

The Royal New Zealand Navy Bridge Simulator is a purpose-built facility to train officers and ratings in navigation, ship handling, communication and bridge management. The facility includes an exact replica of a frigate’s full mission bridge, based on the design of the ANZAC class frigate, and two part mission bridges. Each bridge is capable of operating in an independent exercise or as part of a combined exercise.

The design and build contract was a first for the Ministry of Defence, which Dominion completed six weeks ahead of schedule, with all design review carried out and communicated via email to Norcontrol in Norway. The works included the construction of a precast concrete wall structure with internal precision carpentry and related works, incorporating raised computer flooring for the simulation equipment and the ability to modify the bridge layout.

The resulting accuracy of the construction and communication with Norcontrol ensured one of the simplest of well over 100 installations Norcontrol has undertaken worldwide. Dominion was also selected as a finalist in the Defence Industry Committee Awards of Excellence for 2000.
